1a. Why is Farquhar hanged? Peyton Farquhar is hanged because he was going to where the Yankees had set up a blockade and was going to mess up the work they were doing on rebuilding the bridges and railroads. 1b. Why does the gray-clad soldier visit the Farquhar home? The soldier was pretending to be a Confederate soldier, but was really a Union soldier. He was a Federal scout looking to set up civilians that would interfere with what the Union was doing to win the war. 2a. Recall how Peyton Farquhar is described. Peyton Farquhar is described as a common man, about 35 years old. He had kind features and didn’t look like someone that was going to be hanged. The events that led to the conclusion were the hanging, the imagined escape, the soldiers shooting at him, the current carrying him to shore, the walk home, and about to touch his wife, then the death and figuring out that he’s dead at the end. He was hanging already because of his plans to sabotage the Union’s plans. He imagined the escape, the shooting, the walk home, and the images of the wife. He imagined these things to keep from thinking about what was happening and what was about to happen. 4a. What does Farquhar imagine happens to him?
