Academic Literacy within Health and Social Care Introduction Format and style are used in many ways to present contemporary debates within the health and social care profession. The format and style of writing in debates can vary, to be aimed at different audiences and to present different debates. Within this report I will compare and contrast two articles which are both about my chosen topic; obesity. I will assess the validity of and the influences within each article and see how they affect and contribute to debate within health and social care. It is informative as everything is clearly explained and limitations are noted giving the reader both pros and cons; for example, “The study had limitations, some of which the authors noted:” The vocabulary within this article is quite advanced even though it is aimed at the general public. “Significant reductions were seen in levels of the hormones leptin, cholecystokinin, insulin and the appetite-suppressing peptide YY (P<0.001).” This sentence illustrates a specific use of vocabulary and, although the hormones were explained previously within the article, to understand sentences such as these you would need a level of…show more content…
It doesn’t state when the article was produced, however I accessed it on 2nd of May 2012 and it appeared to be very recent. The article includes hard facts about obesity along with views about certain types of medication. This article is simple and informs the reader about obesity, giving facts and some statistics. For example, "Xenical can help to prevent you from absorbing 30% of the fat you consume". These statistics are embedded within the article. It is also persuasive, the page is trying to influence the reader with an opinion, there are adverts down the side of the page which are enticing customers to buy the drug Xenical - which they state works best when tackling obesity. The report style of the article ensures that it’s easy to read and presents information by using bullet points, headings and sub headings. The audience for this article is also the general public, those who want to know more about
