Academic Ethics - The Code
Just as we use laws to provide some type of control for people’s behavior in society; we use an academic code of conduct to control the conduct of students and faculty in an academic environment.   This system is based on honesty and integrity which can have a positive or negative effect on students when it comes to rewarding for good behavior or punishing for unacceptable behavior.   In this paper, we will examine examples that show how rewarding students solely based on behavior can drive the wrong behavior.   Good and bad go hand in hand; therefore, a reward system is needed for good behavior and a penalty system is also needed for bad behavior.  
The Code of Conduct should be a living breathing document that is used for the protection of an institution, business, profession and/or individual.   It has to be an evolutionary document based on the actions or perceived actions of those it tries to govern.   The codes themselves are developed to show what actions of an individual or a group of individuals that conduct themselves in a less than honorable fashion either in the past, present or future.   These guidelines are used in a variety of ways.   An academic or institutional code of conduct is used to give understanding or a pathway if you will, as to what is expected of an individual while attending a school.   In business it provides a set of rules on how you are to conduct business either with another business, customers, and perhaps another country.   As a professional code it sets the standards of how an individual interacts or provides a service to others. It is more of a quality control function for individuals rather than institutions or businesses.   An Individual code of conduct is how a person wishes to live their lives.   These are self induced and self regulated.   These are the morals and values of an individual established by themselves, their parents’ upbringing or how they develop as an adult.   This code is the most subjective...
