This study aimed to determine the level of academic adequacy of the English major students of Ilocos Sur in their pre-service education during the school year 2012-2013.
Specifically, it sought to determine the socio-demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, civil status, religion, place of residence, parents’ educational attainment, number of siblings in the family, birth order, membership in organization and exposure to mass media; and the school-related profile in terms of type of school, accreditation status and availability of facilities. The study also aimed to find out the significant relationship between the profile of the respondents and their level of academic adequacy along knowledge of subject matter, knowledge of teaching approaches and strategies, knowledge on the preparation of instructional materials, knowledge of the curriculum and knowledge of classroom management; and the significant difference between the levels of academic adequacy of the different groups of respondents.
The study was conducted at the Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s) in Ilocos Sur which offer teacher education courses, namely: North Luzon Philippines State College (NLPSC); Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC); University of Northern Philippines (UNP) and Divine Word College of Vigan (DWCV).
The English major student teachers were utilized as the respondents of the study. Total enumeration was employed in determining the population. Of the 43 student-respondents, 16 came from NLPSC, 10 from ISPSC, 12 from UNP and 5 from DWCV.
This study made use of the descriptive correlational research design with the questionnaire as the instrument of gathering pertinent data from the respondents.
