Physical abuse is when someone causes feelings of physical pain, injury, or other physical suffering or bodily harm to someone else. Most common signs are: cuts, bruises, burns, black eyes and any unusual pattern or location of injury. Sometimes there are signs hard to identify which could also apply in physical abuse, like: fearfulness, depression, anxiety or withdrawal from regular activities and social contact. Sexual abuse is the forcing of undesired sexual behavior or act by one person upon another, usually of long duration. Signs of sexual abuse: Injuries to genital and/or anal area that may not be apparent without an examination, difficulty in walking and/or sitting, change of behavior, overt sexual behavior or language. Psychological/emotional is a form of abuse characterized by a person subjecting or exposing another to behavior that may result in psychological trauma, including anxiety, chronic depression, etc. Some types of psychological abuse are: humiliation, blaming, controlling, intimidation, harassment, verbal abuse and isolation. Some signs are: agitation, confusion, changes in sleep pattern and appetite, depression and fearfulness. Financial abuse is when someone uses a person’s property, money, pension book or other valuables illegally. Some general signs are: lack of any cash, unpaid bills, etc. Institutional abuse can typically occur in a care home, nursing home, and can be any of the following: poor care standards, lack of positive responsive in complex needs, rigid routines, and insufficient knowledge base within service. It could also be any other type of abuse liked discriminatory abuse, neglect, physical and/or psychological and emotional abuse.
