Chin Brown Engl, 1010-591 Abuse of Prescription Drugs The second most commonly abused category of drugs are prescription drugs, followed by cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and other drugs with marijuana being be most abused. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 6.3 million Americans stated that they are currently using prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons. If prescription drug abuse continues to increase, we may have an unbalance society in the near future. Prescription drug abuse is the use of a prescribe medication in a way other than directed by a physician which usually lead to addiction. Addiction to prescription drugs can create problems in personal, work, and family relationships; this abuse may be cause by taking prescribed medication too often, non-prescribed medication to relive pain, or non-prescribed medication to relax or escape. One of the causes of prescription drug abuse is when the patient takes his or her pain medication more often than prescribed. The physician prescribes pain medication with direction to the patient on how often and how much medicine to take. However, the patient intents to follow the physician’s direction but will take the medication more often if the pain persist. Eventfully, this may lead to the patient becoming addicted to the prescribed drug. Another cause of prescription drug abuse is when a person in pain accepts medication from a family member or friend who believes the medication will help. The older generation has more access to prescription drugs; therefore creating a greater potential for abuse. A study conducted between 1992 and 2008 by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) found that prescription drug abuse among Americans ages 50 and up has increased from 0.7% to 3.5%.
