Children are suffering from a hidden epidemic of child abuse and neglect. Over 3 million reports of child abuse are made every year in the United States; however, those reports can include multiple children. Child abuse is the physical, sexual, emotional mistreatment, or neglect of a child. Why do abusers abuse? Abusers, are entitled to power and control over their victim. Like David’s mom she was in charge of everything David did. Abusers use abusive tactics to reinforce their rules and maintain absolute control over their victims. Abusers come from all races, religions, educational levels and occupations. Seek control of the thoughts, beliefs and conduct of their victim. They restrict all of the victim's rights and freedoms. Punish their victim for breaking their rules or challenging their authority. The abuser is responsible for every act of abuse committed. Men who abuse their victims minimize the seriousness of their violence. They use anger, alcohol/drug use, and stress as excuses for their abusive behaviors, and blame the victim for the violence. Characteristics of potential abusers are Jealousy, controlling behavior, isolation of victim, blames others for his problems/feeling, and has a history of past battering etc. David’s mother was mostly jealous than all. It is common that children who were abused become potential abuser themselves. How do abused children feel? This can vary with the child's age, how long the abuse continues, and how serious it is.
