Year 11 Community & Family Studies Assessment Task No 2 Part one: Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. Abraham grew up in Kentucky in a small town, but then later moved to Indiana. Abraham only had 18 months of formal schooling but was still very talented. Abraham was known for borrowing books from his neighbors and finishing them in a remarkable amount of time. He was always more interested in reading and learning and wasn’t very fond of working on the fields with his father. In 1834, 36, 38, 40 Abraham was successful in running for the Illinois Legislature. Abraham was a member of the Whig part and remained in it until 1856 where he became a republican. Lincoln was successful in achieving his goals. He united the Union in the Civil War setting goals by looking beyond the negative aspects of war. He didn’t give up on his goals and fighted until the confederacy was defeated, this showed resilience and the ability lead effectively. As the sixteenth president of the United States, he is considered the most activist president in history. As the head of state he transformed this role into a powerful position making the president supreme over both Congress and the Courts. Empathetic to his fellow countrymen Lincoln supported the Homestead Act which enabled poor people in the east to obtain land in the west. His humor enabled him to settle disagreements among advisors and himself by telling stories that demonstrated his point. This ability to settle conflict without violence or intimidation is evidence of his successful leadership. With a position of authority and influence he set an example of honesty, wisdom and compassion. As a public speaker he shared his vision and passion for learning, however, at times he attacked his enemies with powerful words of criticism and mockery. Recent presidents including Obama have used Lincoln as a model during their campaigns proving, that Lincoln’s leadership styles and charisma made him a successful leader. Furthermore his self-discipline and his ability to inspire others enabled him to unite America after the destruction of the Civil War, rallying the people together.
