Leadership and Abraham Lincoln Walter Kirslis Mid-Continent University April 21, 2011 Every year hundreds of books on leadership come to a bookstore near us. Every good student or leader wanting to learn and study from the best turns their attention to these and many other books, pamphlets and seminars t to stay current with the latest offerings. Whether a seasoned leader or one just starting out, there is one person above all that you should read at least one book about because they are widely regarded as one of the best leaders of the world and presidents in the history of the United States. In trying to write a paper about a leader and defending their actions as leadership I first need to define leader and leadership. Using the dictionary a leader is a person or thing that leads; directing, commanding, or guiding head, as of a group or activity and leadership is the position or guidance of a leader (Neufoldt and Guralnik, 1988, 767). From our class book a definition of leadership I found was that leadership is an influence relationship among leaders and followers who intend real changes and outcomes that reflect there shared purposes (Daft, 2008, 5). Using the new definitions it seems as though history is filled with great leaders whether it is for their leadership to do well or their leadership to do evil there are many people who have qualified to be called a leader. To qualify the person of my choosing as a leader using the definitions given, I will also give specific examples of some of the distinguishing features and key elements of leadership. Some of the distinguishing features of a leader I will use are as follows: keeps eyes on the horizon, creates shared culture and values, helps others grow, reduces boundaries, focuses on inspiring and motivating people and followers, based on personal power, acts as a
