About Henri Fayol and Henry Mintzberg Introduction Management is a valid and coordinate activity human centered for an expected goal in the society. With the development of industry since the late eighteenth century, management influenced the efficiency of the industry to some extent. In nineteenth century, several famous thinkers were found by the world for their famous theories of management. Among them, two thinkers were followed with interest for their theories. They are Henri Fayol and Henry Mintzberg. Henri Fayol is the representative of classical management theory. Henry Mintzberg is the representative of managerial roles school. This essay will firstly discuss the similarities and relations in their management theories. Following this, it will state the differences of their theories. Finally, it will expound each theory has its strong point and defect. They can be reconciled and give guidance at different aspects. Differences in management theories of Fayol and Mintzberg Henri Fayol is the initiator of classical management theory. He firstly pointed out the need for management education. Fayol discussed that the industrial activities can be grouped to six aspects: technical, financial, security, commercial, accounting and management. Fayol pay more attention to the latest aspect, management. Fayol put forward the “principles” and “elements” in management. Fayol pointed out the 14 principles of management. They are: division of work, authority and responsibility, discipline, unity of command, unity of direction, and subordination of individual interest to the general interest, remuneration, centralization, and span of control, order, equity, stability of tenure of personnel, initiative and esprit de corps.
