Women have many different reasons for abortion and the topic of abortion has been controversial for decades. There is not only religion and morals involved but also politics. Canada, as of 1988 has had no abortion laws. The Canadian government needs to rethink this absent of this law and change to make abortion illegal because it goes against the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The rights of the fetus are violated when the Canadian government allows abortion. The Canadian law does not recognize a fetus as a human being until birth, this needs to change in order to make abortion illegal in Canada. In the Canadian case Tremblay v. This law obviously considers an unborn child a real person to be considered. The mother who has a terminancy of pregnancy is committing the same crime that the murderer of the pregnant mother committed. The Unborn Victims of Violence Act, passed in 2004, defines a fetus as a "child in uterus" and a person as being a legal crime victim if a fetal injury or death occurs during the commission of a federal violent crime. In the U.S., 36 states have laws with more harsh penalties if the victim is murdered while pregnant ("President Bush Signs…). Some of these laws define the fetus as being a person, for the purpose of criminal prosecution of the offender. Laci Denise Peterson was an American woman who was the subject of a highly discussed murder case after she went missing while seven and a half months pregnant with her first child. Her husband, Scott Peterson, was later convicted of murder in the first degree for Laci's death and in the second degree for the death of their son who Laci was still pregnant with. Scott Peterson was put on death row at San Quentin State Prison (Hawkins).
