For four gorgeous aboriginals it was the time that changed their lives; 1968. This was the time of Vietnam War. Three sisters Gail, Cynthia and Julie entered a talent competition where they lost because of their skin colour. They gave Dave Lovelace, an Irish alcoholic and a talent scout a paper in which it said troops needed singers for Vietnam. They needed their cousin Kay who lived in Melbourne because she was taken away ten years ago because of her light skin which meant she could live as a white person. When they went to her house, it was clear Kay and Gail hated each other. Kay declined their offer but later said yes. They auditioned in Melbourne and got in, Kay quickly called themselves the Sapphires after looking at Cynthia’s wedding…show more content…
It is also clear that Dave and Gail are falling for each other. Dave even tried to pretend he cooked catfish to impress her. Once she was even going to apologise to Dave for giving him a hard time but she saw him gambling and getting drunk again and so she stormed away. At one part of the film towards the end, Kay is getting ready for her date with a black fellow and Gail states ‘going out with a black fellow won’t make you any blacker’ and Kay punches Gail and she does back. Gail rushes out. Outside Gail explains to Dave why they don’t get along and Dave tells her to dance with her so she does. From this point on she becomes more happy and understanding. Dave hands Gail a paper at one point and tells her to read it when he is not around her. Right after that there was a war scene and the girls luckily escaped but Dave got shot. Gail read the letter the next day and Dave proposed to her through the letter, and seeing that Gail cried a lot. After a while they found out he was not actually dead, he was injured. They were reunited and once he was better they went back and told Gail’s parents that they were getting married. Ever since Gail became happy, understanding and more trusting. The journey though Vietnam changed Gail forever but in a good way but not just only Gail, everyone else
