06/03/1965 Dear Diary, Last month we went on a tour through Walgett, Gulargambone, Kempsey, Bowraville and Moree. There were about 30 of us university students and the total trip was around 2000 km. The whole trip took 2 weeks to complete and I believe our message about racism was sent. The reason for this tour was to experience the living conditions of the aboriginals and try and stop Aboriginal discrimination. We were welcomed by a warm welcoming Aboriginal community. I was extremely shocked at the living conditions of the aboriginals. The majority of aboriginals in those towns were banned from most cafes and clubs. Before we began our protest we got support from the aboriginal mission. Once we had received support from the aboriginal mission we headed for the pools and attempted to walk in with a few aboriginal children. We were rejected and told ‘sorry no darkies allowed’. So we calmly walked back out and blocked the entrance of the pools. The white Australians became extremely vicious and began to throw food at us. Finally after hours of abuse Aboriginal children were allowed in the pools and the ban of Aboriginal children not being able to swim was then removed. I believe the freedom ride was a good act as it bringing awareness to the general public about how the aboriginal’s are being treated in rural areas. I hope racist people understand the living conditions of the aboriginals and the challenges they face in their day to day lives and I hope they change their views. Hopefully in the near future we will stop the white Australia policy because at the end of the day all aboriginals are all human just like us and deserve to be treated the same as every other Australian.
