A couple of years before the events described in the movie, she took an overdose had her stomach pumped. Strange, as it may seem but we know nothing about her family, relatives or friends. She voluntarily checks herself into the psychiatric hospital and at first seems to be the sanest patient in the institution. However soon after this she demands to be discharged. Susanna is diagnosed with borderline personality disorder that is characterized by emotional disturbance.
She has her GED and lives with her two children and boyfriend. She was referred to the outpatient clinic by her in-patient psychiatrist for continued psychiatric evaluation and treatment. K states that: “ no matter what medications they put me on I end up in the hospital twice a year. My highs are my lows. I fly so fast that I end up paranoid and out of it.” As per K; she was sexually abused by an uncle at age 15.

After some investigation it was uncovered that her parents and her brother had ignored the young girl (dubbed “Genie” to protect her identity) for most her life. Her father beat her when she made a noise, and only acknowledged her to bark or growl at her. “Genie” spent most of her life strapped to a potty-chair, barely able to move her feet and hands. Length of Confinement “Genie” spent all thirteen years of her life being physically, verbally, and mentally abused.
Marilyn believed that Bobby would leave his wife for her, and when she found out it was a lie, she became extremely depressed. Marilyn threatened to tell the world about her affairs and it is said that the Kennedys paid her more than one million dollars to keep her quiet (Hosenball) (FBI). Marilyn was extremely depressed and was regularly seeing a psychiatrist. On her last visit to Dr. Greenson, her psychiatrist, she was prescribed sixty seconal tablets (FBI). Seconal is a barbiturate to help relieve anxiety and treat insomnia and the large prescription was unusual because she saw Greenson
Charlotte reports several life events that could be related to her depression. Charlotte lost her job 1 ½ years ago and doesn’t feel qualified to find another meaningful job. Her mother died when she was a teenage and she was forced to take on the caregiver role rather than pursue school. Charlotte has a uterine condition preventing her from having kids. Charlotte is also having some difficulties in her marriage despite stating that the marriage is good overall.
Marian was 11 years old and her parents forced her to marry a blind, 41 years old. Her price was $1,200. When she was living with her husband and his mother, they began to beat her when she failed to conceived a child. After 2 years of abuse, she sought help at police station in Kabul after the police delivered her to a residential neighborhood " Women's shelters", something that was unknown in Afghanistan before 2003. Marian said she felt fortunate to have found refuge.
Character: The most important character in the novel, The Other Side of Dark, is Stacy McAdams, who is a confused 17 year old. She has just come out of a 4 year coma and is suffering the loss of her mother. Stacy was shot at the age of 13. One day she woke up in a new body and in a bed and room that’s not hers. When her best friend Jan comes to visit; she is a totally different person.
Khyra Isheq A girl of seven who was allowed to die by a failed Social Services Khyra Isheq was beaten with a cane and was allowed to starve and eventually die a slow and painful death by her mother Angela Gordon and her step father Junaid Abuhamza. This happened to Khyra even though she was being monitored and visited by at least nine Social Workers, Teachers, Education Officers and even the Police. Many of the people who visited Khyra were simply fobbed off by her mother. Her step father who was found to be a Schizophrenic believed that Khyra was possessed by an evil spirit called a “Jinn” and that Khyra could only be saved by having the spirit starved and beaten out of her. Once Khyra had started to lose weight she was removed from mainstream school and was instead taught from home by her mother.
Girl Interrupted is about the story of a nineteen year old girl during the 1960's named Susanna who, after a suicide attempt, gets admitted into a psychiatric institution (Claymore) and is diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. During her stay at the Claymore Hospital, Susanna quickly becomes familiar to a number of the institution's residents. These residents included Georgina, a pathological liar, Polly, a terminally fearful burn victim, Daisy, an incest victim and extremely withdrawn agoraphobic and Lisa, a charming, but manipulating sociopath. The focus of this paper will be the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment that Susanna experiences throughout the film. Borderline personality disorder is characterized by extreme shifts in mood lasting only a few hours at a time.
Linda Pastan view of grades No one likes to be repeatedly judged, especially their own family. In the late nineteen seventies Linda Pastan wrote two similar, but quite different, poems about being graded. The first one is Pass/Fail (1975) and the other one is Marks (1978). In both the speaker shows that she is less than pleased with the ides of continually being judged, so much so that years later she is having nightmares about failing. The images in both of these literary works show a fear of being graded and judged.
