I attended an open discussion AA meeting and listened to several alcoholics share their stories and experiences. Speaker number 1 was an alcoholic who was 6 years clean of alcohol and drugs. He grew up in a very Italian family where there was a lot of violence and conflict growing up. No one in his family was an alcoholic but, due to all the violence and conflict in his house, he always tried to find a way to escape it all. Speaker number 1’s escape was through alcohol and cocaine. He starting using as a teen at the age of 14 and his addiction only got worse as he got older. He would lie and steal in order to get what he wanted and lost several jobs because of it. At age 26 he made an attempt to get clean and started to attend AA meetings. He rebuilt his relationship with his wife, which is now stronger than ever and is there for his three children. His business is doing great and he now lives a happy and sober life. Speaker number 2 happened to be celebrating his 25-year anniversary of being sober when I attending the meeting. He received his 25-year token and they celebrating by bringing out a cake and singing to him. Speaker number 2 began using drugs and alcohol as a teen as well. Unlike speaker number 1, his family was full of alcoholics. He figured he was bound to be one as well since it ran through his genes, and that’s exactly what happened. He spoke about how during the last quarter of his senior year he barely went to class. He did end up passing all his classes, graduating, and going off to college. Speaker number 2 thought he would be able to drink all he wanted, do all the drugs he wanted, and still be able to get through college. He soon realized that was not going to be the case.
