AP Chemistry Guide for writing and formatting a formal lab report Lab Notebook Set-up ← Number all pages in lower outside corner, in ink. ← On page 1: Design an aesthetically pleasing cover page. Include your name, course title (AP Chemistry), the school year and a graphic. Graphics must be completed in color and represent the full gamut of chemistry ideas. Writing style and format ▪ Physical sciences, like chemistry, are not flowery by nature. Use a technical writing style in which you get right to the point. Be succinct but clear. Use labeled, visual illustrations (diagrams, graphs, etc.) where needed to clarify explanations. All diagrams must be referenced. Avoid first person voice. IV. Pre-lab (if required) ← Attach or write out any pre-lab work neatly. V. Experimental Design (ExD) if required Articulate the experiment you ran using the ExD format. Include variables, levels, all relevant constants, controls, etc. VI. Materials with Sketch of Experimental Set-up ← List the equipment and chemicals used for this lab. Include quantities (1 ring stand), concentrations (100 ml 1 M HCl) and the appropriate names (crucible not porcelain cup). ← Draw and label a neat sketch of the set-up used. Do not draw the separate pieces of equipment. Draw the actual equipment as it was used in lab. VI.
