A Science Lab without Supplies, by Any Other Name, is Just an Ordinary Classroom! A Study for the Need to Address Science Supplies in Schools Chuck Bottoms Dallas Baptist University Fall 2012 Abstract Science labs are an engaging and beneficial part of learning with classroom students. Inadequate science equipment is an obstacle to hands-on science teaching that exists in many of today’s schools. The purpose of this study is to identify the benefit of student learning as a result of well-equipped and supplied science labs on school campuses. Additionally, this plan will highlight how student learning is improved when a hands-on application is practiced in learning. Numerous studies have found the lack of hands-on materials to be a major problem for teachers. Through the implementation of this approach the research will show improved student learning through: documented prior studies, student engagement, and improved individual student test scores. This action research plan will include a variety of data collection methods. Through a focus on validity, reliability, and generalizability data will be collected without loss of integrity. Qualitative and quantitative data will be utilized by allowing for teacher and parent input, surveys and interviews, along with test scores and report card information. Introduction This research will be conducted in the Wylie Independent School District at Draper Intermediate School. The Wylie ISD district is located in Collin County, 24 miles northeast of Dallas, Texas. The student population is 12,400 and consists of students ranging from early childhood through 12th grade. The cities of Wylie, Sachse, Murphy, Lucas, Lavon, and St. Paul are all serviced through Wylie ISD. The Wylie ISD operates with two 4A high schools, one alternative high school, three junior highs, three intermediate, and ten elementary schools. The
