------------------------------------------------- A ROSE FOR EMILY A literary analysis March 10, 2013 angela mace English Composition 100 March 10, 2013 angela mace English Composition 100 “A Rose for Emily”, by William Faulkner begins and ends with the death of Miss Emily Grierson, the main character of the story. The story is divided into five sections. The first and last having to do with the present and the middle three sections having to do with the past. The story used strong characterization. It was a stimulating mystery, and had an ironic twist at every turn. The narrator is never revealed but I believe that the narrator of this story represents several generations of men and women from the town. All of the characters actions are centered on the actions of the main character, Miss Emily. The story begins with the death and funeral of Miss Emily. It is evident that Miss Emily is respected in the town of Jefferson since the whole town went to her funeral. The men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house. The men in Jefferson cherished her just as they did the soldiers who fell at the battle of Jefferson. The women were very curious of her big, square frame house that no one had entered for ten years outside of her servant. After Emily’s death her servant opened the door of the house to the nosey town’s women and then he took off never to be seen again. The women entered the house with quick curious glances and hushed voices. The town’s people think of Miss Emily as a woman of power because of the status of her father. Emily’s father was a respected individual in the town. The Griersons were held above the other townspeople, because of their social status and the relationship that her father and the mayor Colonel Sartoris had. The mayor remitted
