10/26/12 A River Runs Through It The movie “A river runs through it” has a natural flow of life to it. The author of this movie, Mr. Redford feels that the characters of this movie have a hard time expressing their feelings. He has created this unsentimental movie that is ripe for cheap wistfulness. After watching this movie I feel that if people think this is a simple minded and simple hearted movie they aren’t thinking the right thing. Mr. Redford isn’t in this movie, but you can hear his voice through it. This movie is about an old man named Norman Maclean looking back on his life. I have chosen to write about the characters, camera work and the themes of this movie. This story begins in the year 1910, when Norman and his younger brother, Paul were boys. This is a family that is fond but the father is stern. The father insists that Paul sits at the table until he finishes his oatmeal. Paul just sits there and stares at the thickening mess in his bowl for hours. The first two characters that I’m going to talk about are the brothers. Norman and Paul MacLean. Norman MacLean was the elder brother. Norman was the type of person that lived a humble life. When he was growing up he never took on any tasks that would cause injury to him or others. Norman had one activity that he loved dearly and that was fly-fishing. Fly-fishing was something that the two boys enjoyed with their father. Norman always used the technique that his father taught him throughout his life. While he was growing up he didn’t know what kind of job he wanted. Then one day he decided to apply for a teacher position at the college level. One day Norman received a letter in the mail saying he has been offered a teaching position in Chicago as an English professor. Norman was the brother that never got in trouble but he would be the one to help his brother to stay out
