Beneatha is an outgoing colored girl with a lot of pride. She is a very bold and courageous woman. She is going to college to become a doctor. Most women wouldn’t become doctors. They would be house wives or they would be maids for rich white woman.
Women athletes have made huge strides since Title IX but there is still room for improvement. The media coverage of female athletes needs to change for all the young girls who look up to these female athletes as role models and the mass media needs to take a more active role and cover male and female sports equally. The ad Kilbounre is describing is similar to the picture in the Bebe ad, and she is trying to make women see just how degrading these images are. The woman in the Bebe ad is very desperately attempting to get the man's attention by leaning on him and focusing her attention on him, but he doesn't seem interested. The image is posed like that to show superiority and power that men supposedly have over women. This teaches women that they need to constantly dote on the man, whether he pays attention or not.
For example, the word “butterface”, which means overall the woman is attractive “but her face”. Today’s media is barraging women with images of what they are supposed to look like. Examples like these lead women to feel incomplete and inferior because she can never be perfect and completely secure in her
One possible reason is to make women doubt their own beauty, and when someone critiques themselves, the responses are not the most beneficial. This is because we all know our own flaws the best and are not afraid of being too cruel to ourselves. This doubt that women have about their own beauty, leads to doubt about marriage. In my opinion, Americans tend to think that their appearance is everything and go to great measures to get their desired looks. I also believe that people in society are always trying too hard to make them self look like their ideal celebrity. I feel that men and women have different standards when it comes to appearance and how they view it. I also agree with Nancy Hellmich in her article, “Do Thin Models Warp Girls Body Image?” as she says that girls are becoming skinnier and skinnier as the years go by. I think as society tends to focus on their appearance more, it also becomes more dangerous.
She is cunning, resourceful, and brave. She definitely does not fit into the passive role that has been given to the more popular heroines. As in many fairy tales, the beautiful daughter is basically given away as if she is an object to a man who wants to marry her. Of course the girl’s father approves of the suitor because he appears rich, but the girl is not as impressed. The many celebrities like Miley Cyrus and magazines who all try to portray their idea of a woman, alter and distort their perception of womanhood. These girls wear overtly sexual and suggestive clothing and opening act promiscuously in their interactions, forced to go through extreme diets, wear large amounts of make-up and even modify their bodies through surgeries all due to the cumulative pressures of friends, family and their developed self-confidence issues to become this counterfeit ideal. These girls wear uncomfortable heels, constricting clothing and skimpy outfits to hyper sexualize themselves. This is what they believe it takes to become fun, sexy and a desirable woman in today’ society. They go out, drink, “grind” and “twerk” (different forms of highly sexual dancing), and hook up with random guys.
The first such way is to ignore any legitimate concerns women have; the second way is to classify any emotion as unnecessary and “irrational.” Women get taken advantage of solely because society has considered them emotional, which in today’s modern society is often mistaken for being unstable. This in turn affects a women’s status in life. With this in mind, it is the status that will ultimately define their social mobility, “the lower the status, the more manner of seeing and feeling is subjected to being discredited, and the less believable it becomes” (Hochschile 173). Society has usually seen the lower class as unintelligent and therefore have their opinions denigrated. In my opinion, the Gibson Girl is equivalent to the models young girls and women look up to in today’s time as inspiration to be strong-willed, confident, and free. This “new woman” image set a bit of fear in some for they feared this new ideal would disrupt the social order. Isadora Duncan is an example of one of the women who became a real-life example of these ideals. She was a popular entertainer and dancer and boldly undermined gender norms by dancing in bare feet and wearing short Greek-inspired tunics (Bowles, 2011 Sec 2.3). Duncan’s message was that she could achieve success without the help of a man.
