In the play A Raisin in the Sun you are introduced to the Younger family which consists of Walter Lee Younger, Beneatha Younger (“Bennie”), Lena Younger (“Mama”), Ruth Younger, and Travis Younger and other characters such as Joseph Asagai , and George Murchison. The play entirely takes place in the Younger family home which is a small apartment of two bedrooms and one bathroom which is shared with the rest of the building. You are also introduced to the poem Dreams Deferred by Langston Hughes which I believe illustrates the plays theme perfectly. In the 1950’s many Americans all have the same dream to have a nice house with a yard, a big car, and a happy family. Although the Younger family is segregated because of the color of their skin they too want the American Dream. But the younger family and their friends have unfulfilled dreams. Lena Younger also known as Mama is the head of the family she is religious and maternal. Her entire dream is mainly symbolized through a house plant. She gives the plant just enough light and water hoping for it to flourish and become beautiful this is also what she hopes for within her family she gives her support with a small yet continues pay check. Walter Lee Younger son of Lena Younger has one dream and that is to have wealth and be the sole provider for the family this dream causes a lot of trouble. To gain this wealth he wants to invest in a liquor store with his friends the inheritance his mother is soon going to get from his father. Which causes a huge conflict within the family though he wants make this investment the rest of the family does not agree with it throughout the play this causes a large tension between the family. Lena Younger, Ruth Younger and Bennie Younger believe that the insurance money coming from their father’s death should go towards a larger house.
