“A personalised induction will always be more effective”. Discuss. Base your answer on theoretical concepts and techniques presented in class. (1972 words) When undergoing hypnosis, an induction is required to ensure that the client is relaxed enough to experience the process fully. There are several types of inductions, varying in approach, length of time and tone. They can be authoritative or permissive. This essay will explain about the different styles of induction, using different modalities and how effective personalised inductions can be. I will also be looking at when personalising an induction will not be effective and why. There are differences between authoritarian and permissive hypnosis techniques. One tells you what to do, the other plays to the idea of allowing you to feel in control at all times, along with the idea of still making decisions for yourself. The authoritarian technique is commanding, direct and very logical. It does not give the client any choices. The purpose of an authoritarian approach is to establish control over the client and alter their behaviour through the use of repetitious commands. This approach emphasizes the “power” of the hypnotist and is the style adopted by the stage hypnotist. It was also used in the earlier days of hypnosis and offered by the mesmerists, because hypnotists believed that the authority they had over their subjects increased their chance for success.
