A Jury of Her Peers III. Space analysis: 1. The house: “It was down in a hollow, and the poplar trees around it were lonesome-looking trees.” “I've never liked this place. Maybe because it's down in a hollow and you don't see the road.” From the descriptions above, it shows that the house was located at a valley and surrounded by trees. There’s only one road to come in and go out. I think that this is one of the reasons that explained why the Wrights were closed for the location of the house is desolate. 2. The position of the character: 1) “The men went over to the stove. The woman stood close together by the door.” This is the description when they arrived at the Wright’s house. From the place where the characters stood, we can find out the ranking of them. It is obvious that the men got more power here because it was the males who stood by fire in such a cold day. While the females could just stay close to each other to warm themselves without the fire. And they stood by the door where there might be some cold air came in from outside. 2) Women could just stay in the kitchen while the men were looking for clues and evidence upstairs. Women were trapped in it and not allowed to go upstairs. I think from the image that the men spent most of their time “upstairs” and women in kitchen “downstairs”, we can also perceive the concept of hierarchy. Men stepped women under their feet. In most of the world, the “upper” people take control of everything while in the story it is the men who stayed most of the time upstairs. It is clear that men had the power. 3. The cage: The cage which kept the canary is a metaphor. In the story, it symbols that Mrs. Wright was also trapped. What trapped her is her husband, Mr. Wright and their marriage. Basically, her house was like a jail to her and it seemed liked the bird kept in the cage. 4.
