A Good Film

What makes a great film? It may have started as just entertainment, but that was only at the beginning. Films have come a long away and are now an art form in their own right. Films today have their own language and are high forms of expression. Just like there are great books and trashy books, there are great films and trashy films. Great films, like great books, last for a long time. The first important element that a great film must have is a good story. There are a few movies that are epics and which have converted great books into films. These include: The Ten Commandments, Ben Hur and Lawrence of Arabia. In fact for these and other great films, the films brought out the story even better than the books themselves. What was left to the imagination was placed on the wide screen, so that the audience can virtually participate in the story rather than just read it. Of course the opposite takes place too. Many good stories too have been filmed badly, probably because of low budgets. Hence the dedication of the producer and funds available are also important to produce great films. In addition to fine stories, it is good actors who give life to films. We saw that Ben Kingsley portrayed Ghandi in the film as no one has ever done before or since. He was absolutely passionate. It was obvious that the actor was an admirer of the character he portrayed. Often it has happened that it was great acting that made a great film, sometimes a film that lacked everything else. Earlier movies depended almost entirely on good stories, actors and directors to be great. There were no-super stunts and no spectacular special effects. Yet they were good movies and most of that depended on good story lines and skillful acting. Many of the old movies which starred cinema's greats like Laurence Olivier, Gary Cooper and several others were well received throughout the world
