English "A Gap of Sky" This short story, "A Gap of Sky", is about a girl named Ellie. Ellie is 19 years old and she is living in London. Ellie lives by herself and is left to make her own decisions. Ellie does not have control over her life. She is a drug addicted and she likes to party. The story is told by a third-person narrator with an inner view to the main character’s thoughts. The main character’s personality influences the language. The lines are short, and written as a stream of conscience. This leaves the impression that the main character is a confused person. One thought leaves to another which leaves to another. She is attending a course on University Collage London, but have received a letter that says that if her bad behavior continues she cannot continue the course. Therefor Ellie must hand in an essay about Virginia Woolf in order to stay on the course. However, Ellie thinks that it is her parents fault that she started on the course in the first place. Ellie wakes up 16.29 on a monday morning after a long night of partying and drugs "Fuuuuuuck… she shoots up from under the duvet, scrabbles for her phone (…) 16:29. Oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit. Monday it is Monday. Essay there is an essay due, important due for tuesday morning." (p.1, l.12) "She sits on the bed, brings her legs up under her chin, rummages for what she can remember from the night before" (p.1, l.16). Ellie is left alone in London, she feels alone and that her life is meaningless or rather Ellie cannot find her own perception of life. Ellie is doing drugs to escapes the fact that she is lonely. In the struggle of finding out who she really is, Ellie is trapped between her parents' expectation and their dreams for her, social obligations and the youth life of London with drugs and alcohol. she constantly needs to be doing something. something that can take her
