Themes/issues drugs, freedom and reflection. The short story “A Gap of Sky” by Anna Hope is told from a third-person point of view, with an inner view on the main character, Ellie. You get to hear her thoughts and feelings, which influences the language of the text quite a lot. It results in short sentences, sudden shifts in subjects, and a lot of repetitions. Page 4, line 67 “She was nineteen, and in London, and she needed to get some printer ink”, page 6, line 129 “she is nineteen and in London, and she has a paper to write”. But in the end, it gives us a good insight in Ellies personality, and does that we almost literally are in Ellies head, reading her thoughts. One theme of the text is drugs, an issue which is very relevant today. Many teenagers try out a lot of new things in their search of finding their own identity - some try out drugs with the aim of escaping a boring or unhappy reality. Many teenagers have an unhealthy lifestyle, like Ellie. Drugs, cigarettes and alcohol are greatly preferred when it comes to living life to its fullest and make use of ones freedom. This affect the young people, they get addicted, and dazed, and lack on their obligations, e.g. on education. Ellie isn’t content with her life, she feels lonely and unsure of herself. Taking coke, drinking alcohol and partying helps her to attain the feeling of freedom, which seems to be so important to her. It also helps her to escape the loneliness she deals with on ordinary days. Another theme is freedom, The urban setting is important. It has had an influence on the person Ellie is today; the fact that she lives in the city does that she has the opportunity to go to clubs, get drugs and so on. Has she for example lived on the country instead, she probably wouldn’t have done drugs, and might have had completely different personality. But Ellie lives in the city, and it does
