In today's world with our increasing stress and our never ending use of anti-depressants, it seems that today society is on a quest for soma. Similar to the addiction to soma used in the novel, people have an addiction to drugs today. The World State is greatly dependent upon soma. When things are not going right and one needs to escape, all they need to do is pop some soma to relax. In the novel, when Bernard and Lenina return from the Savage Reservation, Lenina decides to take some soma.
This has the consequence that many people have to commit crimes and go into prostitution to buy the drugs they depend on. Yet each time they get what they want, they become more and more sick. Although everything for the people in “Brave New World” is great and everyone is happy and uninhibited if they get their lovely soma, they are also often dependent on the drug. Brave New World’s government supports soma to ensure passiveness of its people and thereby the stability of their created world. The author of the novel based this story on how she actually feels and to show her true emotions. The title of the story is how she explains in the story that she’s trapped in her emotions and she feels like there’s no way out. The main characters play a huge role with keeping her happy and doing their best to be there for her. This story explains what it’s like to be a depressed teenager, but try’s to act okay because that’s how society wants to see her.
The most noticeable for moment displaying how serious their drug addictions were was when I witnessed Brenda going through a withdrawal because her body was craving the drug. Seeing her inject drugs into her body is still difficult to process in my mind. Watching Dicky was equally as sad because of the possible career he threw away because of a drug addiction. All three people have very sad stories. Unfortunately Brenda passed away and Boo Boo still supports his drug addiction by stealing.
Sex workers are looked at as just that, sex workers, and not women who have chosen a perhaps morally questionable means of employment. This negative viewpoint allows for the mistreatment and verbal abuse of these women by police on the streets of Halifax and the world. The legalization of prostitution could help to define protection rights for these women and in doing so generate a very lucrative occupation which would be much safer. The economic benefit of taxing this employment could have positive attributes on provincial and federal governments. Other countries such as Hungary and Australia have legalized prostitution with positive results.
Smoking marijuana has been known to affect the way a person think, feels, and act. Many users’ lose interest in life and become very lazy. People who use marijuana often find it very difficult to concentrate on anything more challenging than television. Marijuana causes a decreased attention span and feelings of isolation. High school and college students who are regular users of marijuana find themselves to be struggling with inner turmoil; feeling depressed, scared, and often suffers from very low self-esteem.
