A Fortune This short novel”A Fortune” is written by Joy Monica T. The title “A Fortune” can be interpreted as many things. First of all “A Fortune” sounds like that someone has found a lot of money and has become wealthy, or someone has found a treasure that makes them wealthy. The way “A Fortune” should be interpreted in this story is that the real treasure not always has to be a fortune worth but something that a person treasure. The style of the short novel is very simple. Joy Monica T doesn’t make this short novel complex. The way they are using their dialect is why that the short novel isn’t so complex. “Watcha gonna tell your ma if she finds them?”(P.7 l.9-10) this informal style that the narrator’s father uses “Watcha” instead of “What are you going to” and “ma” which also is informal and means mother. The father uses this country style from the western cowboy movies. So has the narrator, his son also learned how to use it. He also says “ma” and “pop” (P.7 l.4) instead of dad or father. As for the syntax, the narrator doesn’t use long sentence but short sentence that also makes it simple, “My mother tried to raise me well” (P.7 l.15) The point of view is all seen by the narrator which means that it is a first person view. We only hear what he thinks, what he does and what he sees. Using the word “I” and we know it is a first person. “I saw the kid” – “I remember” (P.7-l.1) The narrator is the person who longs for the recognition by his father. He is like a little child who wants to do anything to get some attention. He wants the attention from his dad and to be seen worthy. He hopes that his father would treasure him. Even though his father is a bad man who does wrong things like pick pocketing and teaching his son how to do it, the father is still his idol.
