In the past, women were not so lucky. Very few women started to break the barriers built by men. Susan Glaspell was one of these women who had to fight against all odds to prove that woman could also write significant pieces of literature, sometimes even better than men. In Trifles, a play written by Susan Glaspell, we can observe some common problems in our society. The title “Trifles” is quite tricky, since it means more than what it appears at first.
In today’s society women aren’t viewed as prized possessions instead they are human beings who share the same rights and privileges as men. In modern society woman have many rights such as; voting, buying and selling of land even if they are married, work in a co-ed atmosphere, joining the military, and politics to name a few. During the Blackstone era none of these things would have happen if women didn’t stand up and say I deserve the same rights and privileges as men. “Congress was the first to break ranks with the passages of the Civil Rights Act of 1957, the Equal Pay Act of 1963, and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The first permitted women to serve o federal juries, the second required that all workers-women as well as men-be paid on an “equal pay for equal work” basis, and the third became the bulwark of the fight against sex discrimination in employment.” (Lingren, pg.40) Congress gave a listening ear to the voice of the women crying out for individual freedom that encompasses rights that were bestowed upon the opposite sex just because they were born male.
Module 4 Answering the Opposition ITT Technical “The Latest from the Feminist Front” What was your initial reaction to Limbaugh’s claim that “feminism was established so that unattractive women could have easier access to mainstream of society?” My initial reaction was that Limbaugh was being disrespectful to women in general. Al women have a right to easier access to society whether they are attractive or unattractive. They are still women and women should be respected as much as men are respected. His statement is also very insensitive. What are two of Limbaugh’s main points?
Women are set such a high standards when it comes to society’s expectations because “average” just doesn’t cut it. Most women these days are expected to look, dress and act a certain way that they normally wouldn’t intend on doing. Women feel pressured on trying to dress more feminine, as they feel, based on society’s expectations, that this is the only way men will feel more sexually attracted to them. Also another reason is that most women also try competing against other women just too simply get more attention. Partially in saying that, women mostly feel the need to make themselves look good because they themselves see them only being attracted to the good looking guys and the only way they think of trying to do this, is by using their looks as a part of attracting the opposite gender.
However, this period where so many great changes had been made in the church, in literature, and in all other artistic areas, women took a big step backward in their fight for equality. Women were thought of as property, owned first by their fathers, and then their husbands. This is only true, however, for the upper-class. Commoners during this time were not affected by the new social reforms. Lower class women still could own properties and shared many responsibilities with their husbands.
Women During the 1920’s Sheena Mang HIS 204 Darrell Rice August 19, 2011 Women During the 1920’s Most women today in our country have the same rights as any man, at the same time there are other countries where women are still being treated differently because of their gender. Thankfully this country is not like that, anymore. There once was a time where women where treated differently, just because they where women. With time and a lot of hard work of some dedicated women, things did change. While women once had few life options beyond isolation in the domestic sphere, some historical developments presented new opportunities for women in society such as their duties, education, work, voice and even dress.
However, the rights which were won seemed to exclude women. Many women did not like this and they wanted to be equal to men and they fought their own war of independence to receive that right. It started off small, but eventually grew into a big movement. Many average women would be remembered as someone great and their names would shine throughout history. One of these women was one known as Susan Brownell Anthony.
Steven Buechler presents a comprehensive analysis of the role of organizations in advancing the cause of the woman suffrage movement (1866 - 1920) and the modern women’s movement. While the early movement was primarily a struggle to gain the right to vote, the contemporary movement has focused on equal rights in every sphere of life. Although large and prominent women’s national organizations such as the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) in the suffrage movement and the National Organization for Women (NOW) in the contemporary women’s movement possessed the resources and the organization skills to lobby the government, they were often estranged from the daily needs of women from minority races and working class. In both
As long as women have been mistreated, they have fought for the same rights that their male counterparts had. In recent years, there have been big leaps in achieving them. However, women are still not seen as completely equal to men in some ways. But as long as there is a woman willing to fight for what she believes in, there is a chance that that may
They say that in the world today women and men are equal. But that is not the case. When it comes to media women are always underrepresented, may it be in politics, business, sports, journalism or in television and films. In this research I will aim to find out why this happens, why it is that the world has progressed so much and so have the women but due to some factors they are just not considered as equal to men. Women are under paid as compared to them, they are quoted lesser in terms of new papers, given lesser speaking roles in the case of films and television shows and those are just a few examples.
