COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF ALLEGHENY COUNTY English as a Second Language 100-AC71 Professor: Mrs. Emily Grazulis Author: Roberto Iriondo 2013 A different world, in a different language Three years ago, I decided to travel to the United States, I was 18 years old and I just finished my first year studying industrial engineering in one of the universities in my native country had around. It was definitely a tough time I got laid off from my job, which left me with no income and I had to make a decision in regards to my future, so I decided to spend what was left of my savings in a one way ticket to the “United States”. It wasn’t my first time in the U.S., I stepped into this land before when I was 16, but I did not like it at all. In my native country “Peru” we speak Spanish and well it was a huge change to travel to a country in which the official language is English and back then my knowledge of the English language was “hello, how are you?” and that was about it. I didn’t want to learn English, I just kept watching Spanish TV shows, and since I was living in Mesa, Arizona in which there is a good quantity of Spanish speaking people that made things stay in the comfortable side. Back then I did not like the US at all, because since I wasn’t studying English, my English wasn’t improving; I had two jobs in a couple of fast food chains in which I barely understood customers’ orders and it was just frustrating, which lead me to save money for a year in those two jobs, not learn anything new about English and I decided to move to my country again. Then I enrolled in one of the universities around there and I studied industrial engineering for a year with almost no money left by the end of the year.
