Plot and Structure: The Public Enemy is the story of the rise and fall of young mobster Tom Powers and his lifelong best friend Matt Doyle during the Prohibition-Era in urban America. They begin their life of crime by doing small petty crimes with a neighborhood gangster Putty Nose. When a fur coat heist goes wrong, Tom and Matt end up shooting a police officer, and Putty Nose flees town. The boys vow to get revenge on him.
Later in the film Andy takes a young prisoner named Tommy under his wing and finds that Tommy’s old inmate was the real murderer. Andy explains it all to the Warden and he finds it to be a very thrilling fictional story that Tommy cultivated to entertain Andy. Andy had a secretive plan up his sleeve to save him from all those years of misery and gets revenge on the Warden for being such a hypocrite and “obtuse”. As we watch this
Films such as The Goodfellas, Once Upon a Time in America and Scarface are still trying to capture the filmmaking magic The Godfather captured in 1972. “The story telling in this film is impeccably Mario Puzo with some help from director Francis Ford Coppola) have two main themes: the end of a great era for a great man (Don Vito Corleone) and the transfer of power to the next generation (Michael Corleone, and his transformation).” The films tell the story of greed and corruption. It explores the morality of the crime family. It also questions society’s notion of good and evil. The scenes are staged within an essentially immoral, criminal, and violent setting.
All covered in blood Benito still smiles to his commanders as a demonstration of strength and satisfaction to the “Mara’s” admission. His name is then changed into “Smiley.” Casper’s and Smiley’s journey in the Mara starts off very soon, they were sent by their commanders in search of opposing gang members and ordered to get rid of them. In the other hand, Sayra, the young protagonist from Honduras, encounters her estranged father and uncle to engage on a life-changing journey to the United States as illegal immigrants. The story’s excitement begins when both protagonists meet as Casper tries to escape his doomed fate while Sayra tries to reach her fate, the “American dream.” The movie emphasizes aspects not yet discussed in our course, but still deals with immigration, poverty, and gangs as important concerns to governments and citizens of third world countries. "Sin Nombre" is one of the most powerful foreign films that I’ve seen lately.
This film displays an adult version of the crime fighting vigilantes and how modern society might react to these characters. This film makes the viewer question if society would accept the vigilante in reality or if society only accepts the fantasy of these “heroes”. The Boondock Saints is a film about two Irish brothers who live in modern day Boston. These brothers believe that God is talking to them and telling them that they must kill the criminals that haunt their city. This film was released at Cannes film festival in 1999 and it was expected to be a Blockbuster hit but, in reality, it turned out to be a flop.
Anton Chigurh is on his trail wanting the money, murdering his employer, opponents and even normal citizens. Moss is clever and tries to keep one step ahead as Chigurh closes down on him. Sheriff Ed Tom Bell runs the investigation as struggles to face the things he is seeing and how different this country is to what he knew. (Chisholm, 2007) The film begins with an audio visual, with a narrator telling his story. We know the narrator is the sheriff because he opens with, “I was sheriff of this county when I was 25 years old.” He talks about the old times compared to the new times, and the change in crime, he’s states, “I don’t want to go out and see something I don’t understand, a man puts himself at hazard and has to say, ok I’ll be part of this world.” As the sheriff talks we see multiple static shots on a wide-angle lens different landscapes, each one harsh and empty giving an impression of the type of country these
Two Irish brothers accidentally killed mafia thugs, after a bar fight. They turned themselves in and were released as heroes. They then see it as a calling by God and started knocking off mafia gang members one by one. Dectective Smecker is trying to figure out the killings, but the closer he was to catching the Irish brother, the more he thinks the brothers are doing the right thing. Irish brothers Connor & Murphy McManus live and work in Boston.
The Shawshank Redemption Often regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ is the story of one man’s persecution and his undying hope of freedom, which ultimately overpowers him into redemption. After being wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and his wife’s lover, banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) he is sentenced to serve two consecutive life-sentences in Shawshank State Penitentiary. In there, he meets fellow inmate Ellis “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman),and the pair form a close friendship. Andy is also great interest to the prison Warden, who uses Andy’s banking skills for money laundering operations. When Andy finds a way to prove his innocence, the Warden soon suppresses the opportunity as he realizes the true worth of Andy and his activities.
Gangs of New York is set in 1863 at the Five Points neighborhood in Manhattan. Amsterdam Vallon is returning to seek revenge against Bill ‘The Butcher’ Cutting, who murdered his father years ago in a bloody clash between Bill’s gang ‘The Nativists’ with the Native Americans and ‘The Deadly Rabbits,” a gang of Irish immigrants lead by Priest Vallon, in response to the Native American gang. During the time that Vallon returns, lower Manhattan is run by gangs, the most powerful of which is the Natives lead by ‘The Butcher’. The movie also takes place during the time of the Civil War and forced drafting into the military leads to some of the worst riots in United States history. Even though Vallon is surrounded by the violence and corruption of the gangs and war, he tries to establish himself and seek revenge for his father’s death.
Jim The Ideal Father The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain describes a strong solid bond that has formed between two people. Huckleberry Finn k who is a young poor white kid and Jim is Miss Watson personal slave. Huckleberry Finn's father Pap as he called him; beat, abuse, kidnap and scare his son to the extent that Huckleberry Finn, out of fear for his own life engineers his own staggering death to run away from his father. When Huck and Jim travel down the river it becomes visible that Jim more of a true father to Huck than his own biological father Pap. Huck’s father teaches his only son that life is not worth living, while on the other hand Jim gives Huck the strong fatherly support that Huck needs including, friendship, and knowledge for Huck to become a real man unlike his father.
