Intro to private security 16 Nov. 2010 Changes in airport security since 2001 We all know what happened on 9-11-2001. Our Country was changed forever. Air travel as we knew it would never be the same. There have been many drastic changes in airport security since 9-11. The newest and most controversially is the full body scanner. These x-ray machines strip a person down to their birthday suit. Also required are lockable cockpit doors and inspection of all bags. I believe many people think that there is an air marshal on every flight that leaves a US airport. This is not the case at all. In a report titled Air marshals missing from almost all flights by; Kathleen Johnston and Todd Schwarzschild from CNN. They state that less than 1% of the 28,000 daily flights that take to the friendly skies in America have an air marshal aboard. Greg Alter, assistant special agent in charge of the air marshal program says that the 280 number grossly understates coverage by an order of magnitude and the number is 4 digits but wouldn’t elaborate. In a post on its web site the TSA (transportation safety Administration) said it would not disclose the number of air marshals flying each day so as not to tip of the terrorists. He did go on to say that the actual number of flights that air marshals cover is thousands per day. The air marshal program started in the 1970s after a rash of hijackings and was expanded significantly after the terrorist attacks on 9-11. ABC news reported that there are many canines working in airport security. "Canines are a great bomb detection capability," said TSA administrator Kip Hawley. "First off, they all do a great job at detecting bombs. Second, they're very mobile. You can move them anywhere, including any airport environment, mass transit environment, and they're extremely flexible in the way we can use them."All the dogs are raised at the TSA's canine facility at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
