Personal success is important to every human being in some way, whether large or small. While this success comes through spiritual means or business means depends on the person, but the reality is, success is important in self-satisfaction. Stephen R. Covey’s book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change,” shows the reader a plan, or option, to achieving success. As a person who finds satisfaction through happiness, I found Covey’s novel to be a great help in laying out a foundation for living my every day life. While he points out the transformation to establishing his suggested habits can be a long one, I have already seen changes in my personal way of thinking that I feel have helped shape my life for the better. In this paper, I will share some of my thoughts on what I like and dislike about Covey’s suggested plan, and how I might apply these habits to my future as a potential business leader. “Our basic nature is to act, and not be acted upon.” (75). While this might be our human nature, Covey introduces his habits with the advice to “be proactive.” After reviewing each habit, I found this habit to be the most important in that it is not possible to form the other habits without taking some sort of initiative. This was the perfect habit to introduce the rest because it showed the reader Covey’s direction from the beginning. I feel like this habit will prove to help me personally because I tend to show indecision in my actions at times. I now realize that because my actions tend to be rational in nature, I should take initiative sooner than later. Indecision in business shows weakness and a lack of knowledge, so taking initiative not only makes things easier, but it also demonstrates confidence in leadership.
