The Coming out Process and Its Challenges The development of the gay community in recent history has significantly improved societal attitudes and transformed our cultural awareness. This change in consciousness has permitted more opportunities for gay individuals to safely come out. Prior to the 1969 Stonewall riot in New York and subsequent 1970 demonstration in Canada where gay liberation was initiated, being homosexual was considered taboo and even treated as a mental illness up until 1973 (Hyde, DeLamater, & Byers, 2009). Despite the numerous advances society has made towards the acceptance of the gay community it remains a stigma within society. The process of coming out still continues to be challenging and difficult and can be an extremely costly and exhausting process; sometimes leading to the individual to tragically taking their own life. In this essay I will examine the stages of the coming out process, the societal biases toward the gay community, and the mental challenges individuals face both with their family as well as their own attitudes. In conclusion, it will be suggested that as a society we have come along way with the acceptance of the gay lifestyle and their rights but we also need further education in strongly held biases and acceptance in allowing individuals to be open and honest without fear of prejudice. Continued education to overcome the ignorance and societal prejudices is the key to successful transitions and a generally more accepting and happier society; this not only goes for sexuality it goes for all forms of prejudices. Many stereotypes exist over homo- and bisexuality thus with further education, open dialogue and communication we will as a society be more accepting.
