Effects of Birth Order Anonymous Com 252 Group Symposium Birth Order "Know thyself" is a powerful principle that leaders, managers and effective people intuitively know. For one to seize a true understanding of their self, it is important to possess the root causes behind their personality. Most of us have a dominant birth order personality that matches our birth position. But that personality is influenced by variables such as temperament, gender and other family circumstances. So it is not so much where you are born in your family but how you function that counts. How a person functions generally correlates with birth position. The categories for birth order vary by different studies but generally goes as follows; first child, middle child (first and second born), last born child, only child and twins. Each category has its own traits which can be affected in many ways. Such as the death of the oldest child would cause a second born to be raised as the first born. The middle child is often a product of his or her older sibling. The one rule of thumb about birth order is that children are directly influenced by the sibling above and will differ from that sibling. "The first rule of the sibling road is that first and second borns will be different in personality, interests and achievement. Generally, the middle or second will be what the first-born isn’t. If the first born is responsible the next in line may well be a pest. If the first born is serious, as they often are, the second borns may well be easy-going and gregarious"(Breland 1997). Middle born are victims of bad timing. Missing the attention and expectations given to the first born and also the easy ride that the youngest receive.
