One beautiful summer in 1870 the girl was born who later on in her life would be given such characterizations and descriptions: Woman of paradox, pioneer feminist, extraordinary woman, social reformer, a woman ahead of her time, controversial figure in education, prophet of pedagogy, woman in a man’s world, advocate for early childhood education, woman who revolutionized the educational system or the world…(various resources) The character that deserved those honorific titles and earned them with her hard and significant work is Maria Montessori. In the essay I’m going to highlight and go through her ideas and events in her life that made her so important in the educational system of “now” and then. Maria Montessori was born at Chiaravalle in the province of Ancona on 31st August in 1870, the only child of well-educated, attractive, middle class parents. Her father, Alessandro Montessori was a typical conservative military man and well known for his punctilious politeness. Dr. Montessori’s mother was Renilde Stoppani. She was a lady of singular piety and charm, and between the daughter and the mother there always was affection and understanding which remained unchanged through all of Maria’s life until death separated them in the year 1912. As a child Maria demonstrated a strong will, desire for leadership and showed an interest in those less fortunate than herself. When there was a time to choose profession Maria refused to become a teacher she entered the University of Rome as a student of mathematics, physics and natural sciences. But she got interested in biology and decided, even with father’s disapproval, to study medicine rather than engineering. Maria found medical school a constant struggle, but she refused to be defeated by male peers and in 1896 Maria Montessori became first woman to graduate from University’s school of medicine. As a
