Explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults. In order to explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults, we must first know and understand why effective communication is important. How we can communicate effectively and how we can develop and maintain positive relationships by effectively communicating. Communication is a two way process. In school and social life effective communication is important as it helps us to develop and maintain positive relationships. It also helps us to understand others actions and behaviour to offer help and advice if it is required. When communicating you must ensure that the following points are considered in order to effectively communicate so that we develop and maintain positive relationships. • Communication can be undertaken verbally or non-verbally. Verbal communication is the spoken word and non-verbal communication is body language, for example nodding the head to indicate agreement or disagreement. • We must speak clearly and concisely so what we are saying is not misunderstood, misinterpreted or worse, lost completely. Adults act as role models for the children. From us they learn how to effectively express what they are thinking. • Active and attentive listening. In order to achieve this we must maintain eye contact and not become distracted. We must also show non-verbally that we are listening by nodding or agreeing appropriately. For example if you are listening but also busy doing something else and repeatedly looking away this will give the other person the impression that you are not interested. Children need our full attention and eye contact in order to develop and maintain positive interaction which will lead to positive relationships. • Give others
