He would also establish his own ethos by including his support for dignified persons that would validate his argument. In the beginning of his article, Gatto immediately establishes his credibility by stating in the first paragraph that he is " an award-winning educator and ardent libertarian…and has taught in New York public schools for more than two decades" (148). By stating his credibility, it would be easier for the audience to trust and believe Gatto's personal opinions about public education - that the lives of American civilians are manipulated by higher authorities in order to make sure that American citizens are dependent to the system and not independent thinkers. In order to further be seen as credible, Gatto uses expertise generalizations and figures that support his overall claim about public education. Gatto would use names such as James Bryant Conant, "the reason for how modern public schools are today," and the opinions of Alexander Inglis that “compulsory schooling was intended to be like the Prussia schooling system: divide children by subject, age, grading, and test scores in order to keep
The research of Asch’s (1956) experiment on conformity has become one of the most popular theories on the subject. Along with his research came many criticisms on his experiment discussing the validity, ethics and comparisons to other experiments to test conformity. Asch’s original study can be criticised because the confederates would have found it difficult to act convincingly in their role. Mori and Arai (2010) overcame this problem by using polarising filters. These altered what each participant actually saw, therefore not requiring actual confederates.
However, it is too late as gradual commitment has already taken effect and made it difficult to leave, as the right to withdraw were met with the verbal prods to somewhat pressure them to continue. Additionally, the electric shocks themselves contributed to gradual commitment as once 15 volts is administered it becomes difficult not administer 30 volts and so on, concluding that the deeper you are in the more difficult it is to escape. This has ecological validity as it can be applied to real life situations, for example in Nazi Germany the severity of persecution of Jews happened in stages. Therefore, when the Nazis had less support in the 1920s the persecution was practical it was more preached in wrings such as mein kampf, therefore Germans gave support as they couldn’t foresee the severity in latter stages. However, when Hitler became a dictator it was impossible to back away because he had absolute authority.
According to the author’s interpretation, Colin Powell acknowledged and wrote about the positive changes in American history, whereas Malcolm X focused solely on racism in American history. Colin Powell mentioned in his autobiography that black GIs had more freedom in Germany during WWII than they did in the country they were serving. Colin Powell mentioned and acknowledged that America does have her faults, but he was thankful that at least America is progressing towards a more peaceful future and that was what encouraged him to love his country and all of its flaws. Malcolm X on the other hand didn’t feel like America was progressing fast enough towards a peaceful future where all American citizens are treated equally. He believed in revolution and violence to try to stop racism.
“Transformational leaders are able to increase follower self-efficacy, giving the group a ‘can do’ spirit. Followers are more likely to pursue ambitious goals, agree on the strategic goals of the organization, and believe the goals they are pursuing are personally important” (Robbins & Judge, 2013, p. 384). By evaluating and comparing my characteristics with my admired leader, Janet Mock, “People working for charismatic leaders are motivated to exert extra effort and, because they like and respect their leader, express greater satisfaction” (Robbins & Judge, 2013, p. 381). Developing those additional leadership skills and advancing the characteristics I currently possess, will allow me the opportunity to expand my horizon. Conclusion Understanding and evaluating leadership styles and theories can allow an individual to assess his or her capabilities.
When one tells a lie no matter how insignificant it is, they lose their integrity because it becomes harder for people to trust them. People usually suffer consequences for being honest but they are more likely to be trusted compared to those who lie. Living by the honesty policy also gives one self confidence. Honest people trust themselves more compared to people who lie. Trust is very important for cultivating respect which is why honest people command greater respect in society compared to dishonest people.
However, ironically, the rare ones who spoke honestly were put to death. In the Brave New World, the government also strategically uses this fear to elevate their control. People of the Worldstate do not fear things we tend to fear such as death or unemployment, instead, they fear isolation. Those who are considered a threat to the “stability” of the society are isolated as a consequence, the example being Bernard. The Salem citizens and the Worldstate citizens, in a way, are similar to the Germans of the 1935.
The use of police force is highly important and can make a huge difference in society. It can make an impact and affect the outcome of a situation. There are people that like the police and there are people who hate them. Regardless of what your opinion is about the use of police force, one should take into account that it is much needed. Police force protects our rights as citizens, enforces the law, and it helps shape a society to make moral and ethical decisions.
Being an officer of the law takes a certain quality of person and some personality types certainly do better in positions of authority than do others. Being a police officer requires a level head and the ability to think quickly. With that in mind, there are three traits that are critical to be a successful police officer; integrity, courage, and a strong set of moral values. Perhaps the most valuable trait a police officer can possess is integrity. Integrity must be maintained at all costs.
Why should people obey the law? By covering some of the basic reasons why people obey the law we will grasp a better understanding why the majority of society follows these laws. Some of these reasons that I am discussing can vary from views of morality will for others have certain obligation to obey the law. Pressure We have many reasons that keep us from breaking the laws of society. For some of us we feel a certain pressure or fear of being arrested that keeps us from trying to break laws.
