The United States took interest in this conflict and decided to provide the Cubans with materials to help them. But it wasn’t long for the United States to intervene in this battle, the “Demand for intervention escalated after February 15, 1898, when an explosion, probably accidental, a later investigation concluded, destroyed the American battleship Maine in Havana Harbor, with the loss of nearly 270 lives” (658). The explosion of the American battle ship was one of the main causes for the United States intervention “President McKinley in April asked congress for a declaration of war. The purpose, declared Senator Henry Teller of Colorado, was to aid Cuban patriots in their struggle for liberty and freedom”(659). While their second reason to aid the Cubans may sound as a big set up for the United States, they indeed help out the Cubans defeat the Spaniards.
Navy members believed that the explosion was caused by mines that ignited the magazines located in the ship. Whether or not this was true, Americans were highly upset and favored the war with Spain. President McKinley declared war against Spain and to liberate Cuba from its colony. Meanwhile, specialized investigators, continued to find the real reason why the Main had been exploded. The studies’ results were that the ship was ignited and sunk by a coal bunker fire next to ammunition magazines and not caused by Spanish mines.
332 Americans were killed and 1642 were injured, and 2957 died from disease. These numbers amount to a total of 3289 soldiers killed because of the Spanish-American war (McSherry). This seems like many casualties, but if one compares it to any other war, it is almost nothing, considering there were 15 million battlefield deaths in the Second World War (Ash 71). Another factor to consider is that the United States spent 5 billion dollars (year 2000 currency) on the Spanish-American war. This also seems like nothing, compared to the 2,300 dollars we spent on World War II
They both were under the Spanish control but the United States caused the Spanish American War and won. Puerto Rico and Guam were made territories and are protected. (Closing Questions, Question #3,
Roosevelt called the event of December 6, 1941 a day that shall live in infamy. Pearl Harbor has been attacked in the first attack on United States soil since the war of 1812. In this surprise attack over 1,200 American military was killed and our Navy has been crippled, another attack like this wouldn’t be seen until September 11. As the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor they also attacked the Philippines, and Wake Island. As the United States was still recovering from the attack on Pearl Harbor, Emperor Hirohito declared war on the United States and the British Empire.
In 1785, the newly freed United States of America ‘suffered’ a consequence of their independence from a Great Britain when the Dey[1] of Algiers, Muhammad V ben Othman (1766-1791)[2], seized an American ship and held hostage its crew for no payment of ransom. Dey Othman did not immediately demand a ransom from the American’s -- the fact that he had seized an American ship demonstrated the weakness of the United States Navy, and that, in his opinion, was worth more than monetary goods. Unfortunately, the first American’s hijacked by a militant Muslim force died before they could be rescued. Thomas Jefferson suggested in 1785 that war was the only solution to this complex problem and felt that by continuing to pay ransom to the terrorists was similar to throwing money away. On 26 December 1786, in a letter to the president of Yale College, Ezra Stiles, Jefferson argued that, "…it will be more easy to raise ships and men to fight these pirates into reason, than money to bribe them.

DBQ –Imperialism | Questions: Should the United States Have Annexed the Philippines? | In 1898 the United States successfully fought a short war with Spain. One of the results of the war was that several Spanish colonies fell into American hands. Two of these were Cuba and the Philippine Islands. The United States made it quite clear that it would not keep Cuba.
America, despite its efforts, could not remain neutral and was forced to enter World War 1. Germany did not respect America’s decision to stay neutral and purposely sunk their ships in the British Isles. They sent the Zimmerman Telegram uniting other countries against America. Lastly, they blockaded British ports and prevented American trade with France and GB. Over 100,000 Americans died during WW1, but were rewarded with patriotism, an Allie victory and trade which once again
