21st Century Media

I am Communications major undergraduate student. Currently, my biggest dilemma lies in figuring out what it is I want to do and who it is I want to be in this media engulfed world. The twenty first century has introduced countless amounts of media outlets - each outlet with its own task and its own agenda. The human mind, along with the advanced technology that exists, has been able to transport information in seconds to people all around the globe. That is known as mass media and it includes communication via television, radio, advertising, movies, the Internet, newspapers and magazines. Media is, essentially, responsible for what it is we think of the world and people. Whether we reckon it to be true or not, these different forms of media are used to shape our thoughts and perceptions because they are present in most aspects of our lives. Media works as an information source when it delivers local and international news; it serves as a form of entertainment when we read the latest celebrity gossips on popular magazines or watch sporting events on television; it severs as a persuasion forum when we are sitting in front of our television being lured to purchase the new iPhone 5S; and it serves as a unifying influence in creative community when people are brought together by ideas instilled to them through these different media outlets. These different functions of media are present in our every day life and there is no denying that we are consumers of it. When I think of media as an information source my thoughts jump to the news that is reported on television and the news that is published in newspapers. Living in the 21st century, however, I know that information comes through so many other media outlets such as online forums and websites.
