“Some Moral Minima,” Lenn E. Goodman argues that there are certain things that are simply wrong. (Goodman, 2010) I agree with this statement and the aspects of morality and relativism. I also agree that every person has the right to live along with having the right not to endure any inhumane treatment. With everything that does go on in this world, in this day and age, things are simply wrong. For example: murder, rape, slavery, and genital mutilation. I feel it is a question of our beliefs. Are there universal moral requirements? It all depends on how we feel about the morals, and what we truly do believe. Is it right or wrong? My philosophy on the four areas of “Some Moral Minima” (1) genocide, politically induced famine, and germ warfare, (2) terrorism, hostage taking, and child warriors, (3) slavery, polygamy, and incest and (4) rape and genital cutting is human worth. We all deserve to be treated with respect, morally, and intellectually. Treat others (cultures, society, and individuals) the way we would like to be treated. Looking at the first of the four areas, genocide, famine, and germ warfare, why is genocide uglier than murder? I feel it all starts with pride and ends with respecting the rights of others. I feel it all lays on the intent not just the wrong doings or the severity of the crimes it infringes upon. Targeting with hatred and destruction does lead to negativity. Sacrificing innocent for population control is, in my opinion, just wrong in itself. Germ warfare and famine target humanity at large. It confuses all morality for power. A perfect example of this was the Gulf War. I feel it is definitely wrong to fire on you own land, especially when it distracts large populations from hard work, economic development, and the demands of spiritual growth and self-mastery.
