The father's protectiveness is very evident many times throughout the novel, however one of the most notable events was when a man threatens his son with a knife and the father shoots the man in the head. Although this action was probably necessary, the fathers downfall is his suspicion that everyone is their enemy. His father's paranoia causes them to move constantly from camp to camp, consequently, never getting the chance to make friends with anyone. His son, on the other hand, is much more sensitive and innocent. He feels very safe with his father but at the same time he questions some of his decisions.
Sarty is called to testify during the hearing against his father for witnessing his actions. He is about to confess what his father has done wrong when the judge dismisses him because of him being young. When the author gets into a fight, he likens the image of the bloody boy he beat to war paint, displaying the brutality of what occurred. Furthermore, he describes how in the third grade, he faced a corner while waiting for his punishment to end and that he was still waiting. This allows the reader to feel the pain that he feels as he deals with these things to this day. When his cousin sniffs rubber cement, the author ironically describes it as “those sweet, almost innocent choices that the Indian boys were forced to make.” He seems to be combatting the stereotype of Indians getting high just to do it by using this example to show that they could make these choices to get away from things like the constant drinking and weeping of their parents in their run down reservations. Finally, Alexie uses words such as starve and noose.
