I have read the book now and I do identify with Winston Smith, the main character, who becomes discontent with his life and big brother and decides to write a diary. It was a cold April day; he clinched his diary deep in his right pocket as he solemnly looked for her. He knew big brother was watching and although there were no laws, the price he would pay for his privacy and individualism would be death. He loved her for sure, that, they could never take away from him. He dared not move, he knew the thought police had sensors on the telephone poles that monitored every movement and heard every word; big brother is always watching and the thought police are always on the look out, it is impossible for any kind of individualism to flourish.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, written by Ken Kesey in 1962, is a book about a lively con man that turns a mental institution upside down with his rambunctious antics and sporadic bouts with the head nurse. Throughout the book, this man shows the others in the institution how to stand up for themselves, to challenge conformity to society and to be who they want to be. It is basically a book of good versus evil, the good being the con man R.P. McMurphy, and the bad being the head nurse, Nurse Ratched. McMurphy revitalizes the hope of the patients, fights Nurse Ratched's stranglehold on the ward, and, in a way, represents the feelings of the author on society at the time.
He sins against his whole family and by thinking that love can be quantified. And as it turns out, Lear isn’t only separating his family but power and responsibility as well. His very unpredictable, easily aggravated temper causes him to act wrongly and irrationally towards Cordelia, his favorite daughter who, he believes has betrayed her. Lear cannot understand that anyone’s, let alone his daughter’s, love for him could be ‘nothing’. I think pride, anger and greed for power prompted Lear to make the decision of giving up the kingdom to his malicious, hateful and ungrateful daughters, Regan and Cordelia.
For example, children were going to shoot Winston because they accused him of being a thought criminal and traitor saying, “You’re a traitor; you’re a thought criminal; you’re a Eurasian spy; I’ll shoot and send you to the salt mines.” (Orwell 31) Additionally, betrayal is seen when Winston disclosed his relationship with Julia in which they both were imprisoned and tortured. The nightmare, and therefore the threatened punishment, of the protagonist Winston Smith is to be attacked by rats. Smith saves himself by begging the authorities to let his lover, Julia, have her face gnawed by the ferocious rodents instead.
