He was the first artist to incorporate “inappropriate” dance moves into his routine, and would put on huge stage shows. The crowd would break out dancing. His lyricism attracted a lot of positive attention from teens, yet very negative attention from parents. It was because of this, and the popularity and fame of his music and him as a celebrity grew immensely, bringing Rock’N Roll with it. Though initially considered provocative, during his career he later appeared many times on television and his music became palatable to many older Americans.
Their 1986 album Raising Hell was preceded by the top ten hit “My Adidas”, and then the release of a cover of Aerosmith's “Walk This Way”, off the same album, became the groups biggest commercial hit. They were the first hip hop act to get airplay on the ever-popular MTV, setting the stage for future hip hop acts to achieve success in their wake. The song “My Adidas” was a brilliant song not only for the content of the song, but also for the massive public response it received. The song sparked
It’s called Rock ‘n’ Roll and it had parents, teachers, and politicians worried for the youth of America. Rock ‘n’ Roll was the first of its kind in that the vocals were not always the center of discourse, but the body language of the performers and the beat of the music moved the audience a lot of times…Rock and Roll was elemental, savage, dripping with sex; it was just as our parents feared” (8). The reason for the fear: Rock ‘n’ Roll evolved from recordings by African-American artists known
The counterculture brought a lot of attention to drugs and popularized them in the teen society (American Cultural History). Hippies who made up a lot of the teen population at the time was very into drugs. Most of theses drugs were still legal at this time because they were so new and uncommon. Scientists didn’t have the research on them that they do today to realize the negative effects they had on teens. One of the most popular drugs invented in this decade was LSD also known as acid, which is a hallucinogenic drug (Neary 122).
Cultivation theorists argue that television has long-term effects which are small, gradual, indirect but cumulative and significant. Disco was an embodiment of individual liberty and self-evolvement. During the seventies there were three other subcultures that were assimilated into the disco culture namely, African Americans, gays and the Hispanics. After being marginalized for decades, these minority groups found a accommodating home in the disco clubs. Significantly, the discos also offered a taste of freedom and self-actualization for three minority groups.
Back then, when I hear “Hip Hop”, I associated it with egoistic rappers and gang violence. It was my least favorite music genre because rap artists only rap about their shopping list and other meaningless topics. It came to the point where I asked, “What is Hip Hop?” I was so curious that I decided to use it as an English research topic. From that point on, my opinion on Hip Hop changed completely due to the fact that there’s more to it. As I researched on what Hip Hop is, I found out that it isn’t just a music genre, but a massive culture that originated within the Bronx during the 1970s.
Disco is a genre of dance music. Disco acts charted high during the mid-1970s, and the genre's popularity peaked during the late 1970s. Its initial audiences were club-goers from the African American, Latino, gay, and psychedelic communities in New York City and Philadelphia during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Disco also was a reaction against both the domination of rock music and the stigmatization of dance music by the counterculture during this period. Women embraced disco as well, and the music eventually expanded to several other popular groups of the time.
These MC's became known as "rappers".” “Eventually, "rap music" was refined to become a mixture of rhythmic poetry, and rappers were getting noticed by 1979 and some commercially successful records were selling locally, though rap had hardly made an impact on the U.S. mainstream.” As the eighties went by, hip hop got more popular and we had some station that would play our music such as BET, but MTV only played everything besides African American music. If they did play it, it was not hip hop. African American’s got so upset with MTV that a station was created called VH1 to have a balance between the music because they played any kind of music that the young people were
They were known for their fast songs, angry lyrics, The Ramones started in 1974 and with their distaste in the music scene at that time, not wanting to conform to everybody else’s ideas of how music should be, they created their debut album ‘Ramones’ in 1976. This is considered to be the first Punk album and has influenced a great portion of the whole Rock genre itself. With 6 of the 14 song being under 2 minutes long and all being under 3 minutes, they had created an album that wasn’t accepted by the mainstream audience and only made it to 111 in the US charts. This album gave out anthems like ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’ and ‘Beat on the Brat’ that whilst unknown to mainstream audiences at first, they are now very well known and have radio airplay. English manager Malcolm Mclaren had moved over to New York City in 1972 to manage a band influencing the Punk genre, New York Dolls.
They produced movements and a lot of social conflicts, contradicting with sociologists and sociological perspectives. The hippie movement supports, and other times doesn’t support such perspectives and the scientists that made them. Hippies are still popular nowadays and their ideas, thoughts and believes are very essential today. A lot of festivals and concerts took place in the 1960s. Such festivals were created in order to reflect the culture of some particular country.
