What Causes a Person to Become a Bully Stephany Bennett York County Community College Abstract This paper will discuss what may cause a person to become a bully. That even though there may be new types of bullies reigning the schoolyards, the reasons have not changed. Most bullies are products of their environment and the lack of parental involvement. The following paragraphs will go over these facts to show some of the causes of bullying. What would cause such a young boy to take his own life? He was tormented and called names; by a bully. Why would someone want to do these things to another human being? What could be so bad as to take your own life? The following paragraphs will discuss the causes and effects of bullying. Just what defines a person as being a bully as it can be similar to other forms of aggression? A bully’s intention is purposeful, not accidental; the goal is to gain control over another person through physical or verbal aggression. Bullying can range teasing someone to outright physical abuse and most people are aware of the bully who takes other children’s lunch money (DeHaan, 1997) It was believed by most psychologists that a bully had low self-esteem. That the reason they bullied was to feel superiority over others, thus making themselves feel important.
