I CAN’T PAY ATTENTION!! Maintaining good grades is a very common academic goal on a college campus among students. With rigorous social lives as well as very demanding workloads, grades have the potential to drop. To aid against lowering grades and to help weaken the workload, college students have resorted to the illegal use of prescription stimulants. The stimulants aid in the maintenance of good grades, but put the users at risk. Misuse of prescription drugs is, of course, illegal in all fifty states. Shockingly, students find it easy to obtain Adderall, and they receive very little information on the matter. According to one study, close to 84% of the students thought access to the common stimulant Adderall was easy (Illicit Use of Prescription). Adderall is one of the common stimulants because of the short benefits it provides. It aids concentration, helps study, and increases alertness, which allows college students to stay awake longer and keeps them alert during the late hours of the night, which is necessary in order to be successful. Even though the benefits may seem impressive, misuse of the drug Adderall has become a large scale problem on college campuses all over the nation and needs to become less accessible for college students. Adderall was first introduced as a pharmaceutical in 1996. Since its introduction, there have been 2.5 million prescribed stimulants due to the rise in diagnoses of ADHD. Just under 4.4 million children between the ages of four and seventeen have been diagnosed with ADHD since 1996 (Illicit Use of Prescription). Children with ADHD are prescribed Adderall to level the playing field with children who do not have attention disorders.
