A Review of Section One After reviewing the ANA Code of ethics, I found the provision one compelling. The provision states “The nurse, in all professional relationship, practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and uniqueness of every individual, unrestricted by considerations of social or economic status, personal attributes, or the nature of health problems.” The premise of this provision to my opinion is the emphasis on the respect for fundamental human right and dignity. Dignity appears to be the cardinal point of the provision. It was interesting to note how the provision coincides with the first theme of the nine key themes of catholic social teachings which states “The dignity of every person and human rights”. (Massaro 2000)The Catholic Church promotes dignity and human rights from theological perspective in that all humans are made in the image and the likeness of God. Another interesting observation is how it upholds and affirms the principles of fundamental human right which promotes dignity and the respect for all humans regardless of race, faith, economic or social status. Nursing as a health care profession, interact with persons of all walks of life, so there is the need to respect each individual regardless of his or her health and socioeconomic status. Dignity is concerned with how people feel, think and behave in relation to the worth or value of themselves and others. To treat someone with dignity is to treat them as being of worth in a way this is respectful of them as valued individuals.
