Psychology- as explored through the eyes of Carl Jung and Abraham Maslow When Carl Jung says, “Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves”, he very aptly describes the role that Psychology plays in exploring and examining the processes of the human brain and how that impacts our behaviors and personality. Comparing the theories of Jung and Maslow could take hours since each one had enough to say about what their beliefs were about the human condition. But while Carl Jung focused on how the unconscious affected our personality (Introversion and Extraversion), Abraham Maslow focused on the integration of self (Self-Actualization Theory). They both studied different ideas, and preached different views about how our mind functioned. While Maslow focused on the humanistic aspect of our personality, Jung focused on the psychoanalytic aspect. However, they were both inspired by two great people. Carl Jung was deeply influenced by Sigmund Freud who happens to be the father of psychoanalysis. Though he dismissed Freudian theory that stated that human personality was defined by their sexual drive and desires, he established that we have 2 states of unconscious. A personal unconscious which he agreed held emotions and desires, but he also proposed the existence of a collective unconscious which is where all the archetypes were stored. He believed that there was just more to humans that just sexual drive. He also left a great deal of impact on psychotherapy by starting the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Abraham Maslow was influenced by Harry Harlow who had conducted the Rhesus Monkey Study which suggested that a lack of contact comfort is psychologically stressful for rhesus monkey when separated from their mothers. Maslow in fact worked with Harlow to further establish this comfort level behavior of rhesus monkeys but used this experiment to work on his motivational research which he later confounded as Humanistic Psychology. It is extremely surprising how Jung and Maslow shared the same views to what psychotherapy is. While Jung brought about AA which helped people overcome alcohol dependence, Maslow suggested the integration of self more commonly, the Self-Actualization Theory. Alcohol addiction is a huge problem in the 21st century, and the formation of AA and its motto to help people self-integrate is important for our current society. It has helped millions overcome their addictions and continues to do so through other anonymous organizations like Drugs and Shopaholics
