It is generally considered that the more languages you know, the more times you are a human being. I guess the same can be claimed about cultural traditions and background. Culture should accompany a person at every stage of his life, thus, influencing one’s upbringing. On the other hand, one’s work, be it literature, music, pictures, is always a portrait of oneself, a portrait of one’s cultural traditions. The culture of a foreign country should be primarily studied through literature. As far as I am concerned, I spent my childhood in a fairy world of Winnie the Pooh. I was dreaming about Mary Poppins to be my babysitter. I was traveling together with Alice and white rabbit to Wonderland and was charmed by Robin Hood. I also envied Wendy because the kindest boy Peter Pan was in love with her. This is how I discovered England at a very early age. Later on, this country turned out to be mysterious, magnificent and as tempting and tremendous as the Middle-earth of Tolkien. I suppose that nothing can disclose the character of a country better than literature, when you try to discover the country from the inside. As a matter of fact, every historical epoch is reflected in literature. William Shakespeare’s plays served as an incentive for me to study the history. When I have seen by “time’s fell hand defaced the rich-proud cost of outworn buried age”. Afterwards, I looked at England from Dickens’s viewpoint. The more I was immersed in the gorgeous mysteries of the past, the more exciting and stimulating it was for me acquire more to compare and contrast old facts with modern life . The knights of the Round Table and Crusaders, Captain Drake and Admiral Nelson, Henry the 8th and his wives and the love of Queen Victoria and Albert, the love that knew no boundaries, Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher and mild and exquisite princess Diana- all these characters make up the
