The media likes to capture rock musicians using drugs at wild parties and acting irresponsible to get attention from people and increase magazine sales and ratings. I consider musicians to be artists who use music as a form of expression. The majority of their actions are to uphold certain image expectations from their fan base. Rock stars are expected to act wild and crazy always engaging in scandals to keep their fans wanting more. While a majority of these people are addicts with psychological issues who usually die from overdoses of illicit drugs many actually have families and are regular normal people when they are not in the spotlight.
Subsequently, there is no clear-cut definition of pornography, the best broad definition available would be “media erotic or sexual behavior in a way designed to cause sexual arousal” (YourDictionary). Pornography has evolved tremendously over the last few decades. The market for it has grown exponentially, it is now an over $100 Billion market which is readily accessible for nearly 300 million Americans today. Pornography takes many different forms such as pornographic novels, magazines, pictures, and most commonly pornographic movies; additionally there are pornographic cartoons, hot lines, live sex shows (D’Orlando). A majority of people have no objection to porn and most enjoy it, but others find it disgusting and would like nothing more than to get rid of it.
In the gay community it is known that sex and drugs go together. The use of drugs increases their sexual drive. Being under the influence of drugs and alcohol increases the chances of having unprotected sexual activities and needle sharing. This can cause the virus to spread along with other sexually transmitted diseases. The use of drugs also decreases the adherence to medications and medical adherence.
When ratings in movies first began, the “R” rating probably meant that sex may have been implied or a few sware words were used. “R” ratings today practically show full on sex scenes and the usages of swear words are ridiculous. Our youth look up to the popular musicians, actors, and
Many people outside of the industry believe it affects teen’s sexual activities and violence tendencies. A recent study in the American Academy of Pediatrics suggested that the display of sex on television can contribute to preadolescent sex. Rebecca Collins et al Ahmed 2 argued in their article that sex in entertainment can lead to teens having sex. She argues that when teens start to become sexually curious, the programming on television showing sexual content influences their idea about sex, specifically in regard to gender stereotype. The amount of sexual content on television is huge.
Since the innovation of the internet, the pornography industry has rapidly expanded; consequently, pornography is one of the most controversial industries as Russel and Watson strongly argue that it elicits sexual aggressive behavior and creates pre-constructed attitudes towards women. Conversely, in the 21st century pornography has transitioned from a heterosexual industry into an divers medium of adult entertainment. Russel asserts that pornography nurtures a violent tendency towards women by a virtue of the social learning theory and creates negative inhibitions about interpersonal violence by performances that objectify women and trivialize the act of rape. (Russel) Howard and colleagues refute Russel’s argument stating that although pornography may accentuate sexual aggressive attitudes, the patterns of violence lie within the individual not the content implying that pornography does not create these attitudes nor will enforce that they will act on them. (Howard) Furthermore, it is impossible to isolate pornography from all other forms of entertainment that demonstrate sexual violence and then conclude that pornography is the only source that exerts these actions and emotions.
But long ago violent games were invented based on violent movies so if someone says it causes aggression then some movies in the world cause aggression too. Violent video games also improve your memory due to finding attacks that work best and you try harder to remember them. They also help you with map work coordinates, self positioning, knowing your surroundings and remembering that you have been in this certain place before. So I think people have their own opinions but I think I have proved a few good points and the violent games were created by people who were aggressive from the start. Everyone deals with stress and frustrations differently.
Nowadays, video games have astonishing graphics, long character scripts, incredibly detailed storylines and many other capabilities for the players. All these advances in the video game quality, made many people question the content of these video games that were being released. One of the main concerns that is still being debated is that of violence in these video games. With the new technological improvements came even more realistic content that thinned the line between a simulation and a video game. The thinning of this line is what made people think about the impact of these violent video games on the everyday life.
Cynthia Wagner states that, “The violent content of those games, particularly those favored by males, is of growing concern to families, schools, and policy makers. Gaming is participatory while television viewing is passive, so the risk may be greater that exposure to violent games will result in violent behavior.”(Wagner, 2004).With video gaming on the rise now, “Video games are in 80% of U.S. homes with children; they generated $6 billion in 2000 and $11 billion by 2003. All indications are that the industry will continue to grow at a healthy clip," says Professor Bradley Greenberg of Michigan State University. (As cited in Wagner, 2004, pg. 16)It has become a growing concern for adults who have begun to take note of the correlation between violent games and violent behavior in their children.
Sex and Violence in the Mainstream Media: Hurting Our Youth With the increase in violence in the media and multiple forms of entertainment, our youth are viewing violent acts on a regular basis. The violent acts haven’t been viewed by the public forever either, just recently since the rise in the TV and the internet the media has become easier to broadcast to a broad range of people. “Indeed, six medical and public health professional organizations held a Congressional Public Health Summit on July 26, 2000, and issued a Joint Statement on the Impact of Entertainment Violence on Children.” This statement noted that, “Entertainment violence can lead to increases in aggressive attitudes, values, and behavior, particularly in children.” (Anderson, 355). Although this was around eight years ago, the issue with violence in the media is still affecting the way today’s youth acts. Today violence is just a part of everyday activity, flip on the TV to watch the news and there is another homicide, or robbery.
