For example, in 2012 more than 40% were not in education, employment or training. 68% of homelessness organisations said there was not enough youth-specific emergency accommodation, while 43% of local authorities reported placing young people in unsuitable B&B accommodation, as well as 6 in 10 homelessness organisations being unable to support a young person due to limited capacity. Homelessness is not only a housing problem. There are lots of reasons why a young person could become homeless. More than half of young people become homeless because of a relationship breakdown, mainly with their parents.
Being raised in a low income area surrounded by people living the same lifestyle as you as if struggling is the norm of society. Children learn from early in their adolescent years adapt to their environment if they see their parents living in the projects in most cases they won’t have any means to get out of the projects. Children are affected mainly because of what they see not all but quite a few children are comfortable living the same way they grew up . No matter the situation the child comes from it will never determine their fate.
Unlike their affluent counterparts, students with in the Oakland system arrived to school with unprepared: academically, often lacked dental and health insurance, came to school hungry, moved frequently or were affected by domestic violence. Parental dissatisfaction about low scores or inferior school conditions have little impact, after all, most residents were trapped. In cases where
Families moved from rural areas to the newly industrialized cities to find work. Once there, things were not as great as they dreamed they would be. In order to survive, families had to have everyone in the household working. This led to the epidemic of child labor with children, as young as six years old, working in harsh conditions for long hours in factories or coal mines (Dunlop, 1912). Young children could be hired to do the same jobs as adults for much less pay and could often fit into places adults couldn't.
Being in the urban city, parents and children are constantly on the move. With both parents working, the children’s activities and friends, there is little time for “family time”. Family time is usually saved up for the special occasions like holidays and birthdays. Sometimes even those events do not guarantee that all members of the nuclear or extended family make an appearance. With the statement by Coleman, Ganong, Clark, and Madsen (1989) that with the urban population so mobile and has fewer close kin available, it is rarely a surprise when family is missing from an event.
In the country of Africa, the education rate is low due to the lack of proper schooling facilities and unequal opportunity for education across country. Most of the youths don’t attend school because they have to work and provide for their families. In America, we have parents who work and provide for us while allowing us to attend school. Due to the lack of medical care epidemics and diseases are prevalent such as Hiv, Chlorent, and infant mortality. The first amendment gives us freedom of religions in many counties only certain religion are allowed.
The neighborhoods where blacks and Hispanics live are made up of families where both parents usually work at lower wages to make ends meet. The children who live in these neighborhoods do not have the same advantages as those students who live in the more expensive suburbs. They are forced to attend the neighborhood public schools. Their parents would never be able to afford private schools or live in the suburbs. In Jonathan Kozol’s essay, Still Separate, Still Unequal, he writes “One of the most disheartening experiences for those who grew up in the years when Martin Luther King Jr. and Thurgood Marshall were alive is to visit public schools today that bear their names or names of other honored leaders of the integration struggles that produced the temporary progress that took place in the three decades after Brown v the Board of Education and to find out how many of these schools are bastions of contemporary segregation” (Kozol 240).
Children cannot raise themselves. Without families, the odds are against them growing into productive citizens and the loss to society is devastating. Many children without parents don’t finish high school, they end up homeless and in our prisions. They are prime candidates for trafficking, prostitution, terrorists and becoming child soldiers. The loss of human potential is incalculable.
Upon these thoughts I began to ask myself the question is it the community's fault and is the community around us responsible for helping these people get back on their feet and restoring their life? It is almost impossible to keep track of the homeless population, partly because they are difficult to find and because it isn’t something for a country to be proud, so it isn’t an issue that gets enough attention. Never the less, homeless people do exist and they are found all over the world. Even though India has the largest number, with 70 million homeless people, this is just 10 percent of its population. There are many contributing factors to becoming homeless.
“A Modest Proposal” Social Satire Essay People question why some people tend to be homeless. Well most of the time it’s because they can’t afford a home to stay in. In many cases homeless people live out in the street with no protection from the predators that lurk outside. The lucky ones get shelter and barley survive. Los Angeles has the highest number of homeless people in the United States, estimated at 73,000 in 2008.
